The pier at Gar Woods Grill & Pier is the spot where, on calm days, the restaurant's mahogany boat "Dispatch" sits on display. It's an echo of Garfield Wood, the boating pioneer who engineered the fastest powerboat in 1930 and gave the place its name. Since Oct. 8 the deck has been closed. Owner Tom Turner is using a two-month closure to refurbish the floors and replace old equipment, and the restaurant plans to reopen in December, according to the Sierra Sun. No exact reopening day was announced.
Late October near the bay is full. December brings Gar Woods back. The stretch that really goes quiet is a narrow one, Nov. 12 through 24, when a second familiar kitchen nearby closes too and the outdoor season starts shutting down in steps.
The announcement was cheerful about the reason. As the Sierra Sun reported it:
"You poured a whole lot of love into Gar Woods this summer, so now it's our turn to pour some back into the place."
The restaurant has promised "the same Gar Woods you've loved for 38 years" when it reopens. That covers the lunch and dinner service, the weekly live music, and the private weddings and events it hosts. If you can't wait for a Wet Woody, the rum-based frozen drink is also sold at Turner's other places, including the Riva Grill and the Sparks Water Bar. Neither is a short drive from Carnelian Bay, so for most people the drink will simply wait until December.
The closure also lands at the end of a generous summer. Before the announcement, Gar Woods joined a fundraising campaign with other Tahoe restaurants that raised close to $400,000 for the Tahoe Fund.
On a calendar, the first weeks of the Gar Woods closure are crowded. The North Tahoe Public Utility District's events calendar for North Tahoe Regional Park lists two Halloween-week events. The other side of the bay has Tahoe City's Hauntober, presented by the Tahoe City Downtown Association and the North Tahoe Chamber, and the Sierra Sun published the month's schedule. Here are the dates still ahead as of this week:
The Oct. 30 overlap makes Halloween eve the one night this fall that pulls the bay two ways at once, toward the park in Tahoe Vista and toward downtown Tahoe City. More Hauntober details are being added through the month at VisitTahoeCity.org.
With Gar Woods closed, the next-nearest table is right in Carnelian Bay. CB's Bistro lists lunch and dinner daily from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., cocktails, happy hour from 4 to 6 p.m., and live music on Thursdays. It's the closest substitute for the weeknight music that Gar Woods normally hosts.
East along North Lake Boulevard, the Tahoe Vista options cover different hours of the day:
Closer to the water in Carnelian Bay, Waterman's Landing advertises breakfast, lunch and pastries, and calls its beach club year-round. It doesn't list café hours for the shoulder season. Tahoe House Bakery & Gourmet lists hours of 6 a.m. to 3 p.m., seven days a week, as a bakery, café, deli and gourmet grocery.
Spindleshanks' own site says it will be closed from 11/12 through 11/24, and on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. Those 13 days fall entirely inside the Gar Woods closure. For nearly two weeks in the middle of November, both of the long-running deck restaurants on this stretch of shore are closed at once.
| Kitchen | Listed hours | Status Nov. 12–24 |
|---|---|---|
| Gar Woods Grill & Pier, Carnelian Bay | Closed since Oct. 8 | Closed, reopening planned for December |
| Spindleshanks, Tahoe Vista | Breakfast, lunch, dinner daily | Closed for its scheduled break |
| CB's Bistro, Carnelian Bay | 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily | No closure posted |
| Old Range Steakhouse, Tahoe Vista | From 5 p.m. daily | No closure posted, call about tables after 8 |
| Tahoe House Bakery & Gourmet | 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily | No closure posted |
The outdoor calendar thins out over the same weeks. North Tahoe Regional Park's non-peak parking season, when resident parking costs $5 per vehicle or is free with a parking pass, runs from April to early November. The Tahoe Rim Trail Association says the dispersed camping area at Watson Lake is scheduled to close November 15, with no campground water or trash service after that date. At Burton Creek State Park, once snow is on the ground, dogs are barred from the designated ski trails from Nov. 1 to May 1 every year.
So mid-November is when the season actually turns over near Carnelian Bay. A Gar Woods-shaped hole on its own is much smaller than that.
The routines close to home don't depend on any restaurant. Patton Landing, a three-acre, pebbly California Tahoe Conservancy property east of Sierra Boat Company, has a launch for boats without motors, accessible paths, restrooms, a café and a small 23-car lot. The Tahoe public beaches database describes its beach and coffeehouse as year-round, though café hours vary. Just west of Sierra Boat Company, the Carnelian West public beach shares its parking with Gar Woods.
Up the hill in Tahoe Vista, North Tahoe Regional Park at 6600 Donner Road is open dawn to dusk, with 124 acres, seven miles of marked trails and restrooms. The Pam Emmerich Memorial Pinedrop Bike Path connects to the park's trail network. A trail-access project linking those trails to the park's restrooms, playground and trail parking was finished in October 2025, so this is the park's first full fall with those connections in place.
For something more remote, Burton Creek State Park on Tahoe City's northeast side has six miles of unpaved routes for hiking, biking and, later, cross-country skiing. It's open sunrise to sunset. It has no water or restrooms, and dogs are limited to the fire roads. The Tahoe Rim Trail's Brockway Summit trailhead on Highway 267 has paved spaces along the highway. The Tahoe Rim Trail Association asks hikers to park head-in and take care crossing the road. If Watson Lake is on your list, go before Nov. 15, while the camping area still has water and trash service. Treat any water you take from the lake before drinking it.
Spindleshanks reopens after Nov. 24, then closes again on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 26. Old Range Steakhouse is also closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas. Tahoe House is closed Thanksgiving Day, and its site carries a notice about preordering Thanksgiving turkeys. That's worth knowing during a month when fewer local kitchens are open for a big meal out.
After that, things start coming back. The Tahoe City Farmers Market keeps its Thursday mornings at Boatworks Mall through Dec. 17. Gar Woods is scheduled to reopen sometime in December with new floors and updated equipment, so watch the restaurant's own announcements for the day the Dispatch is back at the pier.
